Why I’m leaving Wannabe Hacks

by Emily Handford

As you may have noticed I haven’t been writing much for Hacks recently. I have been struggling with demands of juggling working life and producing consistent work for the site. So I have come to the difficult decision to leave my role with Wannabe Hacks.

I’ve loved writing for the site and the opportunities it has brought. From being featured on Roy Greenslade’s Guardian blog, to participating in heated journalism debates and providing advice for fellow young journalists I have enjoyed every minute.

That is the main reason why I joined Hacks. I found myself speaking about my experiences to others and how I eventually got a job in the industry so writing posts for Wannabe Hacks made perfect sense. It’s a great feeling when someone says those tips helped them in an interview or on placement.

Also, I really enjoyed putting Twitter names, or should I say handles, to faces at our networking events. That’s what is great about Wannabe Hacks, it is a place where like minded young journalists can converse with each other, share tips and give their opinions on what is happening in the industry from the ground up.

Right now I’m proofing, writing, fact-checking, assisting everyone in the office at Touchline publishing while learning all the time. I hope to gain as many skills as possible, progressing onto editing, subbing and who knows where I may end up. When I set out I wanted to work at a national women’s magazine in fashion or features, but where I am now is a great start.

If I could give one ultimate piece of advice for our fellow wannabe hacks it’s this – be enthusiastic and prepared to get your hands dirty. It can be tough sometimes but be eager and you will go far.

Hopefully this won’t be the last you see of me – I’ll be tweeting @emily_handford and I’m sure guest posting for Wannabe Hacks from time to time. Of course stay tuned to the site, there are some exciting things on the way. Good luck and ta’rah!
