The Undergrad gets ready to go back to uni

by Natalie Clarkson

So on Monday, after a month at home in Essex being spoilt by the parents, I’ll be heading back up to Stoke-on-Trent for my final term of university. Being at home has been great but I’m definitely ready to get back to uni and get working now – there’s only so many hours I can work in a call centre without going mad.

This term’s going to be a big one for me. Although my contact hours are right down to something like 5 hours a week, I’ve got more work to do than ever before. I have the joys of sorting out my final project, which is turning out to be more of a beast than I ever expected so I can tell there will be many hours agonising over that.

I’m also taking a module in subbing and editing, which I’m really looking forward to. We did an introduction to production journalism in the first year and although I didn’t get the best mark, I really enjoyed it. So this time around I’m vowing to work even harder at it and hoping that my mark will reflect the amount of effort I’m planning on putting in. (By this I essentially mean not leaving most of the work until the day before deadline!)

As well as taking on all of that I also have to try and form my portfolio into something that actually gives a fair representation of the work that I’ve done. I fear there could be many, many hours spent on this.

Oh and of course there’s the small matter of looking for a job as everyone keeps lovingly reminding me I can’t stay at university forever.

So what about you other undergrad students? What have you got going on this term? Let me know via the comments or tweet me @wannabehacks, we can be a support network for each other as we struggle through the next few months. Also if you have any tips for surviving the final term of uni, do share!
