Being two of the teachers reminds us we still have so much to learn

by Tom Clarke

Last night The Student and I attended a discussion session run by the Kingston Journalism Society and we were asked to give a quick presentation on one of four topics discussed; entrepreneurial journalism. We would both be quick to admit we are not experts in this field and we offered only a snapshot of what is a complex and wide-ranging subject.

What was most interesting from a selfish point of view was finding what people thought about Hacks and whilst we’re on the subject I would ask you to take two minutes to fill in our survey (pretty please).

But arguably the best part of the evening was not getting to impart some of our wisdom (good job it was only a ten minute talk) or receiving invaluable feedback but what we learnt from others – people out there who are trying to do things their own way. We met Anthony O-Thomas who gave a fascinating presentation on what it means to be an entrepreneur and how he is putting his knowledge and passion to very good use.

We also got a welcome reminder from Adam Westbrook about the my News Biz competition – a fantastic opportunity for all student journalists to get a helping hand to turn that special project into something really successful. Anthony taught us all about the more business minded approach to being your own boss and Adam gave a great example of the opportunities which are out there for students to make a name for themselves.

Both provided were incredibly useful not just for what we learnt but also reminded us that whilst we might have been the ones stood at the front telling people our opinions, there is still so much you can learn from other people.

Make sure you check Hacks this afternoon for two short videos from Anthony and Adam – I promise they will be well worth a watch.
